On May 16, eight Kennett High School juniors competed in two groups of four at the Temple University Owlympiad math competition.

The men won this round by scoring sixth among 69 competing schools, with 147 points against the top team’s 157 points (Unionville High School). The ladies team of four fared well in round one, but finished out of the top ten. Scores in the event ranged from the top 157 to 45.

Competing on the sixth-place men’s team were P.J. O’Sullivan, Zach Shen, Jonathan Baumel, and Richard Doty.  They were accompanied by AP calculus teacher Mr. Ron Phillips. Competing on the women’s team were Kate Bolten, Marisa Maxwell,  Hannah Dale, and Nicole Brown.  They were accompanied by AP calculus teacher Alicia Tamargo.

Temple University's Mathematics Owlympiad is Philadelphia's largest math competition for high-school students. The goal of the competition is to promote mathematics and introduce students to career paths in applied mathematics.

Organized by the Fox School’s Risk, Insurance and Healthcare Management Department and the Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS), the annual event features three rounds of competition to test the skills of the 11th graders in attendance. Any public, parochial or private high school in the greater Philadelphia area may bring up to two teams, comprised of four students each.
The competition is comprised of a written examination, group problem solving, and a championship lightning round. The contest covers topics in areas such as algebra, geometry, trigonometry, probability, matrices and pre-calculus.
