PEDESTRIAN KILLED

New Garden Township police reported that Juan Zavala, 66, of Wilmington, Del., was struck by a car  as he walked along Route 7 on Dec. 27. He was later pronounce dead at a hospital.

Police say that at 5:43 p.m., Zavala was walking south on the shoulder of the road when he stepped into the path of a car being driven by Donald Bailey, 71, of Gap. Zavala was wearing dark clothing and Bailey told police he had no time to brake. A motorist who saw the incident confirmed that Zavala staggered into the path of Bailey's car.

Bailey stopped and tried to help Zavala, who was alert and talking to emergency personnel after being struck. He was taken to Christiana Hospital with head trauma, internal injuries and broken legs. On Dec. 29, he was removed from life support after consultation with family members and was pronounced dead at 9:52 a.m.
