We are cheap

The United Way of Southern Chester County, ably led by Carrie Freeman, is closing in on its 2013-14 goal of $1.2 million. All the money raised by the United Way goes to worthwhile nonprofits right here in our own backyard.
The $1,144,000 already raised comes from only 1,630 people. Let's say that the roughly 50,000 population figure for southern Chester County is approximately 16,666 households, using an average of three people per household. Statistically, only one out of 16 households make any contribution to the United Way.
To be honest, this is a pathetic response from a middle-class region of mostly single-family homes. Non-givers should be ashamed of themselves for not contributing even $10 to a charity that supports only our nonprofits and citizens.
Some of our corporate citizens, such as PECO, gave $82,000 from their local employees, but a vast majority of businesses with more than 50 employees contribute nothing and don't ask employees to contribute.
We can -- and should -- do better than that.
