Kennett Square Borough Council approves contract extension for borough manager

Kennett Square Borough Council unanimously approved a three-year contract extension for Borough Manager Brant Kucera on Monday night.

Borough Council President Dan Maffei said that Kucera, who was originally hired in October of 2008, has been working without a contract since October of 2011.

“He has not had a performance review in a number of years,” Maffei said. “We’re very pleased with his performance. He has been a great asset to the borough.”

Maffei said that Kucera has helped Kennett Square start addressing budgeting issues that had been ignored for quite some time. Under Kucera’s leadership, the borough has been able to obtain grants and fund some capital-improvement projects that had long been planned. The borough has also started setting aside money for necessary infrastructure improvement projects.

The borough manager also reduced staff and streamlined operations, Maffei said, which has helped the borough function more efficiently.

“He has been a good steward and leader for the staff at Borough Hall,” said Maffei.

In other business:

Borough council authorized the Civil Service Commission to conduct entry level testing so that a list of qualified candidates can be developed for a position in the Kennett Square Police Department.

Mayor Matt Fetick said that one of Kennett's police officers is accepting a full-time job closer to home, leaving a second vacant position in the department. He added that it will take a number of months for the Civil Service Commission to complete its work before the borough will be able to interview candidates and hire a replacement.

“Charging {the Civil Service Commission} tonight may get a list of qualified candidates by November or December. It’s a long process,” Fetick said.

Borough council also approved the Special Event applications for the Bayard Taylor Memorial Library’s Rock the Lot outdoor music festival on July 20 as well as a Viva tu Vida 5K Run and Walk that is scheduled for Sept. 28.
