MacKenzie Harrison, a student at Hopewell Elementary School, won second place in Zoology out of 27 projects for sixth, seventh and eighth graders at the recent Delaware Valley Science Fair.

She won the opportunity to compete at DVSF by qualifying with a second-place ribbon at the local Chester County Science Fair in March. She also won first place at the sixth grade science fair at Hopewell Elementary in January. She now has the opportunity to apply to the Broadcom Masters for national recognition.

Her project, “The Effects of Different Amounts of Caffeine on the Life Span and Behavior of Drosophila hydei,” looked at the death rates and behavior of flightless fruit flies when exposed to different amounts to caffeine, while comparing the results to a control group.
