Camp Elder: The Strange Story of Westtown's Union Paroled P.O.W. Camp
How did nearly 2,000 Union soldiers, taken prisoner at Gettysburg, end up in a paroled prisoner of war camp in Westtown Twp. Chester County? Who were these men? How were they treated? What became of them? Its existence practically unknown today, Camp Elder was a sudden imposition on Chester County and the community responded well to soldiers brought there from at least 14 of the loyal states. Presented by historian and author Dave Walter, chairman of the Westtown Twp. Historical Commission and a descendant of a Union soldier whose regiment guarded the P.O.W. camp.
