2nd Annual Scottish Festival
The Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation will hold its second annual Covenanter Scottish Festival on September 12, 2015, on the grounds of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church and the Octorara Covenanter (Shrine) Church (1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, PA). Activities will begin at 8:00 AM and close at 6:00 PM. Free parking will be provided at the Smith Middle School, 645 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville. Shuttles will run every half hour beginning at 7:30 AM. Limited handicapped parking will be available on site. Tickets for the event can be obtained through the Foundation website (www.oldcovchurch.com). $10.00 for adults twelve and over- under 12 free. Admission on the day of the event will be $15.00 per adult – under 12 free. All proceeds go to maintaining and preserving the Octorara Covenanter (Shrine) Church and its attached schoolroom museum.
Musical performances will feature Charlie Zahm, Fire in the Glen, The Washington Memorial Pipe Band, Tad Marks, Carl Peterson, Oliver McElhone, The Campbell School of Dance, and Hannah Zettlemoyer.
This year the festival has added two new events: a Highland Games competition and a Piping Competition. The former is through the Penn’s Wall organization. Events will include: stone toss(braemar & open), weight toss for distance (light and heavy), flaming caber toss, caber toss, weight over bar, hammer toss (light and heavy) and sheaf toss. The latter includes eastern United States Pipe Band Association sanctioned competition for pipers.
Visitors will be able to examine artifacts at the Covenanter Church and attached schoolroom. Items of interest from the Covenanter traditions, Middle Octorara, and Bart Township Schools will be on display. Virginia Landis will be the hostess at the Church and Barry Girvin will provide Living History. Barry will appear in the role of Hiram Troop, Sr. who taught at the one-room Bart High School during the years 1918 to 1927. Many residents of Bart Township were blessed with his teaching at other locations during his long career.
