Kennett Square man killed in crash in Chadds Ford

A Kennett Square man died on Wednesday morning in a two-vehicle collision in Chadds Ford.

The accident occurred at Route 1 and Creek Road.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, David Keith Hutchens of Lincoln University was traveling south on Route 1 at around 5 a.m. when Hutchens lost control of his car. His car traveled over ice and snow in the road, and collided with a vehicle going north on Route 1, operated by Jeffrey Mark Phillippe of Kennett Square.

Phillippe died as a result of the accident. Hutchens was also injured. The intersection was closed for hours after the crash as Concordville Fire and EMS and Riddle EMS assisted at the scene. Traffic was detoured around the site, causing backups in the road leading to the Brandywine River Museum as motorists tried to get back to Route 1.

In a message posted to the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District site, superintendent John Sanville announced that, due to the closure of the road, and the closure of the bridge in Pocopson, he was forced to cancel school on Wednesday.

“With both Route 1 and the 926 bridge out, our community is effectively cut in half,” Sanville wrote. “Under these circumstances, bus runs could take hours. We feel it prudent to close schools today. Our offices will open on a two-hour delay schedule.”
