The fourth annual “Vive tu vida Get Up! Get Moving!” event was a big success in late September, as an estimated 1,850 participants -- an increase of more than 400 people from last year -- attended the health and wellness festival at Anson B. Nixon Park.

“We had an excellent response to this wonderful and worthwhile event,” said Margarita Queralt Mirkil, president and CEO of La Comunidad Hispana. “We promote a healthy lifestyle throughout the year. LCH thanks the 130 volunteers and 240 exhibitors and activities participants for making this event successful.”

The event's national sponsor is the National Alliance for Hispanic Health. The local partners are LCH, the YMCA of the Brandywine Valley and the Mexican Consulate.

Health screenings were conducted, including an estimated 600 free flu shots given. Demonstrations and attractions included dance, New Garden Karate, University of Delaware Zumba, YMCA jump rope and hula hoop sessions, the Juggling Hoffmans, tennis, volleyball, soccer clinics, and a health walk with fitness stations sponsored by Christiana Health Care Systems. There were YMCA inflatables, crafts, raffles and games for the family. Kennett Square and New Garden police departments gave demonstrations.

In addition to healthy snacks from the Chester County Food Bank, Giant and other sponsors, the second annual salsa contest took place, with the winner being Tapatia Restaurant in Kennett Square.
