In conjunction with the Oxford Area Historical Association and the Oxford Educational Foundation, George Washington biographer Carl Closs, of Kennett Square, visited several schools in the Oxford Area School District. The visit came on Feb. 21, one day before General Washington's 282nd birthday.

Dressed in full military uniform, Closs met with second grade students at Elk Ridge and Nottingham elementary schools, fifth graders at Hopewell Elementary School, and seventh and eighth graders at Penn’s Grove Middle School, tailoring each presentation for the specific grade level. At Oxford Area High School, he discussed the issues of the American Revolution, as well as current events, with students in the AP U.S. history and honors civics courses.

Closs is a former educator and business executive who has dedicated his retirement to helping children and adults discover George Washington. Oxford Area Historical Association member Ralph Denlinger, who coordinated Closs's visit, said, "I feel George Washington and the celebration of what he did as head of the Continental Army and our first President has been lost in the schools and public eye since President’s Day began to overshadow Washington's birthday as a national holiday. Mr. Closs is ensuring that Washington's legacy is understood by new generations of young people."
