A step backward

London Grove Township stepped back into the Middle Ages and replaced its professional real estate tax collector, Berkheimer, with a man named Kurt Engleman.

Virtually all municipalities changed over from an elected tax collector to hiring a private firm like Berkheimer Associates, a very well-respected company. However, for 2014, London Grove Township choose to replace Berkheimer with an elected tax collector.

According to London Grove Township Manager Steve Brown, Engleman is charging the township the same as Berkheimer. Brown said he didn't know Mr. Engleman's occupation or anything about him.

To say that this change has a “fishy” smell is not an exaggeration. Mr. Engleman had to know some London Grove Supervisors, who may have made the change to help Engleman financially.

What London Grove Supervisors did is not illegal, but it is pure cronyism and an insult to London Grove residents.
