Kennett Square planning a mushroom spectacular on New Year's Eve
12/18/2013 09:50AM ● By AclExcitement is growing for the first “Mushroom Drop,” the highlight of the “Midnight in the Square” celebration in Kennett Square.
Organizers are planning a family event to ring in 2014. As attendees count down the new year, an 8-foot tall, 700-pound stainless steel mushroom will be lowered 80 feet, landing at the stroke of the new year.
“Midnight in the Square” begins at 9 p.m. The Funsters will be playing classic rock and roll hits on State Street. Food trucks will be set up along Broad Street, offering festival foods. Downtown restaurants and many shops will be open for the event as well. Bob's Crane Services will lower the ceremonial mushroom at the corner of State and North Union streets.
Parking is available at the Exelon parking lot, the Kennett High School parking lot and the Genesis parking lot at 600 S. Broad St. Free shuttle buses will bring guests from these parking lots to State Street.
Alcohol is not permitted on the streets. Admission is the donation of a non-perishable item or canned good to be given to the Kennett Food Cupboard.
The event is a joint venture of the Kennett Area Restaurant and Merchants Association and the Mushroom Festival, Inc. Visit the “Midnight in the Square” Facebook page or the Mushroom Festival website (www.mushroomfestival.org) for details and weather updates.
