David Lubin, the Charlotte C. Weber Professor of Art at Wake Forest University, will discuss N. C. Wyeth’s illustrations for Robert Louis Stevenson’s adventure classic Treasure Island, paintings that suggest deeper and darker overtones to both Stevenson’s narrative and to the story of Wyeth’s life. The Brandywine River Museum of Art will open at 5:30 p.m. with the program at 6 p.m. and a reception to follow. Professor Lubin received his Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale. His book, Shooting Kennedy: JFK and the Culture of Images, won the Smithsonian Institution’s Charles Eldredge Prize for “distinguished scholarship in American art.” Lubin’s latest book, Grand Illusions: American Art and the First World War, was published by Oxford University Press in 2016. His awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship and research residencies at Harvard, Stanford and the National Gallery’s Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts. In 2010 he was a visiting professor at the Free University of Berlin and in 2016-17 was the inaugural holder of the Terra Foundation for American Art Visiting Professorship at Oxford University.
