Vote to support education

Letter to the Editor:

In 2010, in the midst of the Great Recession, Gov. Corbett came to power in Harrisburg. He and the Republican legislature made a gamble. They would go ahead and honor their pledge to cut business taxes, but in order to do that, they would need to make up the loss of revenue someplace else. They decided to raid the education budget, hoping that the public would forget the severe cuts after four years.

Fast forward to 2014 and guess what? The voters have not forgotten the savaging of public education. From kindergarten up through the commonwealth’s universities, the effects are plain to see. Increased class size, program cuts, no nurses, no aides, fees for everything and huge jumps in tuition. That is the legacy of Tom Corbett and Rep. John Lawrence, both of whom are now both back-pedaling and giving weak excuses for their budgets and the disastrous effects.

On Nov. 4, join me in telling Harrisburg that they have to do their constitutionally mandated job and fund education fairly and fully. Vote for Tom Wolf and Ann Schott, both of whom believe that education is not some line item but an investment in our children, our grandchildren and Pennsylvania’s future.
