West Grove Presbyterian Church Presents Check to YoungMoms

09/24/2014 02:01PM ● By Lev

Members of West Grove Presbyterian Church (www.westgrovepres.org) presented a one thousand dollar check to Linda Mercner, Director of YoungMoms, at their traditional worship service at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, September 14.  Proceeds from the annual church yard sale in June of 2014 were donated to benefit the young mothers in the program.

YoungMoms of Kennett Square is a group of young pregnant women and parents of young children who are between 14 and 22 years old.  The majority of them are in the 17 to 20 year old range.  The mission is to guide teen mothers in facing obstacles they have encountered in life by learning new skills to handle the challenges of adolescence and parenting at the same time.

The inclusive support group provides academic and vocational guidance.  Relationship and parental mentoring are emphasized at the meetings and in the activities.  The young mothers are tutored by mentors who implement an incentives system for the accomplishment of goals.  They learn how to write resumes and fill in job applications.  They are instructed about the best techniques to use in handling interviews for jobs.

The young mothers receive relationship support by sharing stories at meetings with young mothers who have experienced similar life situations.

They receive parental support by learning about child and family development with their mentors.  Instruction in Bible Studies is offered to participants who are interested in learning about scriptures in the Bible.

The meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at Willowdale Chapel in Kennett Square.  Information about YoungMoms can be found on their website--www.youngmomscommunity.org.
