The Youth Philanthropy Award, which is given to young, emerging philanthropists under age 35, has been given to the West Grove Garage Student Advisory Council.

Each year, the Chester County Community Foundation looks for Chester County citizens who have made a notable effort to improve their communities. They are honored with Legacy Awards in five categories: Youth Philanthropy, Thanks for Caring, Door Opener, Corporate Social Investment, and The Jordan Award.

The council includes 10 middle- and high-school students from the Avon Grove School District. The Garage offers youth enrichment activities, and tutoring/mentoring for students This group of peer-led philanthropists meets monthly to identify and coordinate fundraising, community service and outreach events that benefit the Garage and the greater community.

In 2013, the council raised more than $3,300 to support The Garage’s after‐school programs through student-led fundraising activities, such as student dances, a garage sale, and a Cinco de Mayo fundraiser.

In addition to raising funds for The Garage, the council coordinates outreach events that help bring new students and families into The Garage. A Mother’s Day Dinner, Community Soccer Festival, packing boxes for Operation Christmas Child, and distributing candy on Halloween are examples of recent outreach activities the council coordinated and implemented.

The West Grove Garage Student Advisory Council and other award recipients will be honored at this year's Chester County Community Foundation Legacy Awards Celebration & Annual Meeting on Nov. 3 at West Chester University’s Madeleine Wing Adler Theater.
