Michael Kelly, the president of the Kennett Education Association, presented senior Abigail Roberts with a scholarship for $5,000 to be paid over her four years of college.

The Kennett Education Association (KEA) held it 23rd Annual Scholarship and Awards Reception on May 22 to recognize outstanding students for their academic merit and school citizenship.

The Kennett Education Association is the professional organization of teachers, librarians, guidance counselors, school nurses and school social workers.  Each year, members of KEA select students from different levels and disciplines for recognition for their academic achievements and school citizenship qualities. The awards are funded by contributions from members. This event represents over $7,000 in support by members.

Receiving awards for their accomplishments at the elementary level were fifth Alondra Herrera-Esquivel and Edwin Leon (Bancroft Elementary School), Kayleigh Zubrod and Chase Harris (Greenwood Elementary School), and Caroline Cofran and Ryan Myers (New Garden Elementary School).  These students were awarded certificates and $50 book gift cards.

Recognized for their performance at Kennett Middle School were eighth graders Nicole Huff and Jake Kalscheur, who received certificates and $100 book gift cards.

Earning accolades at the high school level for excellence throughout their high school careers in their disciplines were seniors Sydney Eckert (Business Education), Monica McGuire (Family and Consumer Science), Kristin Schaen (Fine Arts), Kelsie Cairns (Technical Arts), Aaron Hrenko (World Languages), and Gabriel Leto (Science).  Two students earned awards in two disciplines: Katherine Coughlan (English and Music), Kiera Judge (Social Studies and Mathematics).  Each of these awards carried with it a check for $200.

KEA president Michael Kelly presented the most prestigious award of the evening to senior Abigail Roberts, who will be pursuing a teaching career in mathematics. Kelly welcomed Roberts into the profession and commended her for her dedication to building the future. Roberts plans to major in mathematics and continue her athletic pursuits at Appalachian State University in the fall. Kelly presented Roberts with scholarship money in the amount of $5,000, to be paid over her four years of college.
