New Garden Growers Market opens for the season May 10

04/30/2014 01:26PM ● By Acl

This is the tenth year of operation for the New Garden Growers Market in Avondale. The market season kicks off on May 10 and will continue every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Nov. 22.

The market is held in front of the New Garden Township Maintenance Garage on Route 41, near the entrance to the township park and the intersection with Newark Road in Avondale.

Twenty full-time farmers/vendors will take part this year, selling fresh fruits and vegetables, naturally raised meats, eggs, and cheeses, mushrooms, plants, and cut flowers. Also available are gourmet prepared foods, breads, pies, and pastries, gluten-free baked goods, natural dog treats, local honey, jams and jellies, and handmade crafts and soaps.

On opening day there will be a market birthday cake with free slices for customers.  Music will be provided by local favorites Howard and Jerry, and free balloons will be handed out to children.

There are special events planned for children and adults throughout the market season. On July 5, the market’s fifth annual “Zucchini 500” will take place.  It's a soapbox derby, but with zucchinis as the cars. The market will provide the zucchinis, the wheels, and all the supplies needed.  Races will take place throughout the day.  It is free to participate.
