Youth summer programs at Chester County parks

Chester County parks are welcoming visitors of all ages, and offering special programs this summer aimed at young people. Here are the offerings:


Summer Discovery Series 

Park: Nottingham County Park, Nottingham

Ages: 7 to 13
Times: 6 to 8 p.m.

Cost: $8 per session ($55 for all eight)


June 19: Call of the Wild – Explore the calls of various animals and what they mean.

June 25: Search & Rescue – Learn how rescue dogs use their noses to find lost people. Learn how to be safe in the park and what to do if you’re lost.

July 10: Tree Detectives – Learn what trees grow in Nottingham County Park and why it is a unique place for plants to live.

July 15: Astronomy -- Learn some of the constellations of the summer sky while looking at planets, star clusters, and other galaxies. 

July 24: Archery – Learn the basics of archery and practice your skills. Equipment is provided.

July 30: Aquatics --  What lives in McPherson Lake? Investigate the layers of the pond and conduct a stream study at the Black Run. 

Aug. 5: Fire in the Barrens -- How do firefighters put out wildfires? Inspect and test the equipment and gear used to do their job. Learn why fire can be important in managing the Serpentine Barrens.

Aug. 14: Bonfire & Awards -- Join the rangers for a farewell to summer. Enjoy s’mores by the bonfire.


Wilderness Games 

July 28 to Aug. 1

Park: Hibernia County Park, Wagontown

Ages: 10 to 14

Times: 9 a.m. to noon

Cost: $110


You have been chosen as the tribute to represent your District. In preparation, learn to move stealthily through the forest, build natural shelters, camouflage yourself, navigate the outdoors, track one another and pack essential gear.
