Penn’s Grove Middle School eighth grader Carson Beans, daughter of Nicole and Ron Beans, was one of 10 finalists in the 2014 Kick Butts Day Essay Contest sponsored by the Chester County Tobacco-Free Coalition.

Contest participants were required to submit a persuasive essay about their experiences with tobacco use or feelings about being protected from secondhand smoke, with Carson sharing her own story on how smoking impacted her life when her grandfather was diagnosed with cancer.

Carson and her family attended the Kick Butts Essay Event on March 19 at the Chester County Government Services Center, where she read her essay. She is pictured with principal Lisa Stenz and language arts teacher Brandon Hargraves, who worked with Carson on her essay.
