Six local students received awards for the 2014 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition.

The PA Leadership Charter Schools, University Scholars Program, announced that the award recipients included: Zane Kodama, a tenth-grader from West Chester; Jessica Scovell, a tenth-grader from West Grove; Mackenzie Walker, an eighth-grader from Oxford; Peri Walker, an eleventh-grader from Oxford; Niklas Theorin, a tenth-grader from Landenberg; and Kristofer Theorin, a tenth-grader from Landenberg.

This year's contest had record-breaking student participation. There were 255,000 original works of art and writing submitted to the 2014 Awards. Of the 255,000 entries, 16,500 were awarded the Gold Key designation. Scovell, Theorin and Theorin all received the Gold Key.

Winning works then qualified for national judging, and just 2,050 of those were awarded National Medals. Theorin's Flash Fiction story, "Reach Pull," has received a National Silver Medal.

PA Leadership Charter School is an online state wide public school, for students in grades K-12, with a main office in West Chester.
