In celebration of Girl Scouts World Thinking Day, more than 275 local cadette, brownie, daisy and junior troop members of the Brandywine Valley Service Unit joined  at Unionville High School on Feb. 8.

Now in its 14th year, World Thinking Day invites girls from around the world to participate in activities and projects with global themes to honor their sister Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in other countries. The event is part of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts Global Action Theme, based on the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals, which aim to improve the lives of the world's poorest people. Held every Feb. 22, the event is designed to complement the Girl Scouts' increased attention to global issues as well as efforts to advance diversity.

The event has has been available to the Brandywine Valley Service Unit – which serves more than 700 Girl Scouts and 60 troops in the Unionville-Chadds Ford and Kennett Consolidated school districts -- since 2001, when it was developed as part of a Girl Scout Gold Award project by Lesley Anne Bernasconi, a 2001 graduate of Unionville High School.

Dressed in clothing representative of their chosen country, each troop made exhibits, crafts and food. As an added activity, troop members wrote 'Thank You' notes to men and women serving overseas in the United States Armed Forces, which will be mailed along with more than 5,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies.
