As part of the Jan. 20 National Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., students and families in the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District are being asked to make the school holiday “a day on, not a day off.”

Classes will not be held in the district on Jan. 20, but the buildings will be open for those who want to volunteer their time to help others. An adult should accompany all elementary-school aged children. Each of the four elementary schools will serve as collection points for non-perishable food donations to support the Kennett Food Cupboard. Donations should be dropped off on or before 9 a.m. on Jan. 17.  If parents want to bring non-perishable food donations on the morning of MLK Day, there will be marked vehicles at the entrance of each of the three elementary schools to receive the donations and to bring them to Unionville High School.

Among the volunteer opportunities are:

Chadds Ford Elementary – Make crafts for hospitalized children. Call principal Mark Ransford at 610-388-1112 for information.

Hillendale Elementary – Take part in a soup kitchen and prepare bag lunches, or take part in the “Backpacks for MLK's Dreams” Project. Call Steve Dissinger (610-388-1439) or visit http://hes.ucfsd.org. Online sign-up is requested.

Pocopson Elementary – Help make fleece blankets and bookmarks. Contact Nancy Jones at njones@hessiancircle.com for information.

Patton Middle School – Volunteer at Pocopson Home, or help clean up Anson B. Nixon Park in Kennett Square. Contact Jim Fulginiti (610-347-2000) or visit http://cfpms.ucfsd.org.

Unionville High School – Volunteer with Adult Care of Chester County, sort food donations in the school cafeteria, volunteer at the Kennett Senior Center, or volunteer at Mission Santa Maria. Contact Jim Conley (610-347-1600) or visit http://uhs.ucfsd.org.
