Oxford Borough is the latest community to join the Classic Towns Program.

The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) launched the Classic Towns of Greater Philadelphia initiative in 2008 to spotlight what makes older communities in the greater Philadelphia area so distinctive. Other communities in the program include thriving small towns like Manayunk, Kennett Square, West Chester, Ambler, and Glassboro, N.J.

These towns benefit from the program in a variety of ways. Each town is showcased on the DVRPC website and in “Classic Towns Times,” a newsletter for the program, with information about why each of the communities is a good place to live, work, or visit. The town’s calendar listings and activities are publicized in various promotions like Plan Philly’s Trolley Tour of Chester County’s Classic Towns.

The DVRPC looks at a range of characteristics to determine which towns qualify, including character, culture, and convenience.

In a release from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, Oxford was lauded for its prosperous past, its present, and its promising future: “Smaller than two square miles, it is a pedestrian-friendly and family-oriented community that is preserving its history as it focuses on a building a promising future for its residents and businesses alike.”

It was also noted that Oxford is a close-knit community that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town earned favorable reviews for being walkable and for having seasonal events throughout the year for residents and visitors.

Information about Oxford’s participation in the program can be found at classictowns.org/oxford.
