Charles and Gertrude Sersun celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary

Fifty years ago on Nov. 16, Gertrude Grohman said “I do” to Chuck Sersun at the Carteret Presbyterian Church in Carteret, New Jersey. It all began when Gert’s sister introduced the two, after Chuck’s return home in 1960 from serving in the U.S. Air Force at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, AZ. Gert was instantly smitten by Chuck's dazzling good looks and his 1959 convertible MG.  Eighteen months later, the two married.  There was no denying this was a match made in heaven. The happy couple have been Nottingham residents for the last 37 years.

Prior to becoming Mrs. Sersun, Gert attended Carteret High School in New Jersey. Following her 1961 graduation, she worked as a business clerk in New York City. The energy of NYC was no match for Chuck, though. The choice was clear to leave her position and dedicate her time and talents to raising their three children: Ken, a retired Air Force Colonel living in South Carolina; Patti, a dedicated mom and home-schooler residing in Arizona; and Doug, a retired Air Force Lt. Col. living in California.  With her children grown and living on both ends of the country, she continues her dedication to family by traveling at a moment’s notice to visit and care for her children, five grandchildren and many great nieces and nephews.

Chuck Sersun is a graduate of Carteret High School and Rutgers University. After high school, he served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Arizona, attaining the rank of Airman First Class.  After completing his service to the nation, he embarked on a 30-year career in the chemical industry with Union Carbide and later ICI in Wilmington, Del. He retired in 1992 and now spends his time hunting, fishing, and volunteering to fly as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Delaware Wing of the Civil Air Patrol.

The two are celebrating their golden anniversary with two bucket list trips: one to Branson, MO and the other a cruise to Alaska, courtesy of their children.
