Drug Take-Back Day this Saturday

Kennett Square Police Chief Edward Zunino announced that the police department is again participating in the national Drug Take-Back Day. The Kennett Square Police Department will be accepting unwanted, unused, and expired prescription drugs this Saturday, Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the police station.

This is the seventh time that Drug Take-Back Day has been held to raise awareness about the potential for abuse of medications and to provide a safe, convenient place to dispose of prescription drugs. According to the 2011 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's National Survey of Drug Use and Health, twice as many Americans regularly abused prescription drugs than the number of those who regularly abused cocaine, hallucinogens, heroin, and inhalants combined. That same study revealed that more than 70 percent of people abusing prescription drugs got them through friends or relatives, a statistic that includes raiding the family medicine cabinet.

So far, the Drug Take-Back programs have removed from circulation more than 2.8 million pounds of prescription medications.
