The long-discussed ordinance to lower the speed limit through the village of Unionville was unanimously approved at the Oct. 7 meeting of the East Marlborough Board of Supervisors.

Supervisor Richard Hannum has coordinated efforts to get the speed limit reduced from 35 miles per hour to 30 miles per hour, and he introduced the voting on the resolution at the meeting.

"This is something that many of the residents will be excited about," he said. "This is a huge step forward."

The speed limit will take effect as soon as new signs are posted along Route 82 in the village. The signs should be in place by the end of this week.

Supervisor Robert Weer, Sr., and board chairman Cuyler Walker thanked resident Jack Greenwood, who was at the meeting. Greenwood has been a longtime advocate for traffic-calming measures in the village, where motorists often exceed the posted speed limit.

Walker told Greenwood, "You've been very vigilant in terms of all the intiiatives for safety in the village. I appreciate all your help."

Reading from the ordinance, Walker said that the new speed limit will be in effect from the Route 82 roundabout to the western edge of the village. Further improvements to the road will include Unionville signs at either end of the village, and several crosswalks, Hannum said.
