Oxford Wall of Fame announces inductees

Six new inductees to the Oxford Area High School Sports Wall of Fame were recently announced by the selection committee. The 13th annual induction ceremony will take place on Oct. 14.

Two of those selected this year are James Canaday, class of 1994, and Janine Collins Pavese, class of 1983.

When Canaday completed his high-school wrestling career, he left an outstanding resume  that has been difficult to match. He was team captain his final two years and recorded 130 victories against just 11 losses, a county and school record at that time.

Canaday credits wrestling coach Scott Gold for helping him and his team win many awards during his school career. During four years, he was selected for the Daily Local News All-Star team, and in 1994 to the Southeastern Pennsylvania Philadelphia Inquirer first team.

Pavese earned seven varsity letters while at OAHS. While playing in a basketball tournament at Garden Spot, she became a member of the all-tournament team, with a two-day total of 37 points and 32 rebounds. She had many other games during her high-school career, where she scored double digits in both points and rebounds, followed by a first team selection to the Southern Chester County All-Star Team in 1983.

She was very active on McCarthy's softball teams while at Oxford, playing third base and batting .443 at the plate during her junior year. In addition, while a freshman, she ran the 440 in track and received a bronze metal in the SCCL Relays.

These are two of the six athletes who will receive their awards at the banquet. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria, with a dessert serving and a chance to meet this year's recipients. At 7:30 p.m., the awards will be presented in the auditorium. Admission is free and the public is invited. More information about other inductees will appear in next week's Chester County Press.
