Upland Country Day School was presented with a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives marking the school's 65th anniversary serving the community and educating area students. State Rep. Chris Ross presented Upland interim head of school Archie Douglas with the citation at the school's Founders' Day Reception on Sept. 13. More than 170 members of the Upland and local communities, including members of the school's founding families and faculty, attended the Founders' Day reception on the Upland campus.

Upland opened its doors on Sept. 13, 1948 with a single schoolhouse and a handful of students from kindergarten to third grade. Today, 65 years later, the school encompasses 23 acres with seven buildings and six athletic fields, including an on-campus ice rink. More than 1,000 students have graduated from the school's Pre-K to ninth grade program.

Jock Hannum, son of one of Upland's founders, Nancy Hannum, and one of the school's original students, spoke to the audience of the school's early years when students rode horses to school.

In speaking to the Upland community, Douglas remarked, "We feel it is important for you to know something about where all this came from, that you are part of something bigger and more permanent than this gathering of people. To remember that before there was now there was then, that the school you know and enjoy today is the product of the hard work and love and dedication of hundreds - maybe thousands - of people. We hope, too, that you will help carry the school forward, that you will help spread its message of responsibility, trust and understanding, its lessons of participation and teamwork, its legacy of innocence and joy."

The Founders' Day reception kicked off Upland's Founders' Day Weekend with the annual community-wide picnic, chili cook-off, used sporting goods sale, and student versus faculty/parents field hockey and soccer games.
