A Lincoln University student was found guilty last week in connection with a 2011 high-speed crash that killed one man and severely injured another.

Phillip Tomsic, 23, of Bangor, Mich., was charged in West Chester Common Pleas Court on Aug. 28 with homicide by vehicle while DUI, involuntary manslaughter, reckless endangerment and other charges. The case was heard by Judge Anthony Sarcione last month without a jury.

Tomsic was driving the 2004 Impala that hit a tree on Ashum Road near the Lincoln University campus on the night of Nov. 4, 2011, killing his passenger, Anthony Vernon Washington, 21, and severely injuring another passenger, Kadeem Fulmore. The three friends were attending Lincoln University and had gone to get food on the night of the crash. Police said the car was speeding at more than 85 miles per hour when it hit the tree and caught fire. All three had reportedly been drinking alcohol before the crash.

Washington died at the scene. Fulmore, who is now 23, sustained severe injuries and burns. He lost his right foot and his left leg below the knee, and suffered a brain injury and burns over half his body. He is still hospitalized due to his injuries.

The charges against Tomsic could put him in state prison for three years or longer. Sarcione increased his $75,000 bail to $150,000 cash and sent Tomsic to Chester County Prison. Sarcione will set a sentencing date after he completes a pre-sentencing report.
