Mike Prolley of the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 5467 in Kennett Square presents certificates to Fred S. Engle Middle School students Victoria Provost (team Delaware) and Vincent Garguilo (team West Chester) in recognition of their winning entries in the Patriot's Pen Essay Competition. Provost placed first and Garguilo placed third in the local contest.

Sponsored nationwide by the VFW, the youth essay competition provides students in grades six through eight an opportunity to express their views on democracy. Contestants write a 300- to 400-word essay based on a patriotic theme. This year's theme was "What I Would Tell America's Founding Fathers."
