May 30
Senior Expo
A Senior Expo with Dominic Pileggi (R9) will be held May 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Red Clay Room (423 Dalmation St., Kennett Square). There will be nearly 60 exhibitors from state, county and local agencies offering information on programs of interest to seniors. The Chester County Health Department will offer shingles vaccines for those 60 or older who are uninsured or who have insurance that doesn't cover the vaccine cost. There will also be free health screenings, nutrition tips and information on resources for seniors in Pennsylvania. The event is free. Music and polo
The “Friday Nights under the Stars” summer concert/polo series begins on May 31 at the Brandywine Polo Club fields (232 Polo Rd., Toughkenamon). There will be food, live music and polo matches beginning at 5:30 on Fridays. This season, $1 of every ticket goes to the Education Foundation of Unionville/Chadds Ford School District. Guests will sample foods from Carolina Pit BBQ, wines from Galen Estate winery, or bring their own picnic. Tickets are $20 online and $25 at the gate (children under 16 free). May 31-June 2

Young adult theater

The West Chester Studio for the Performing Arts and the Uptown Entertainment Alliance present “Furry Tales,” a new take on fairy tales by Joel Doty, at 2 p.m. on June 1 and 2. “Middle Class & Second Class” by Brad Slaight will be performed on May 31 and June 1 at 7:30 p.m.  Both shows will be performed at the Chester County Historical Society (225 N. Airport open house
The New Garden Flying Field will host a free open house and antique car show on June 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (rain date June 2). There will be live music, airplane displays and rides, antique cars on display, radio-controlled aircraft demonstrations, safety presentations, and festival foods for sale. June 1
Lancaster County tour
The Southern Lancaster County Historical Society’s Fourth Annual Southern End House and History Tour will take place on June 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be 14 locations in Bart and Sadsbury townships and Christiana Borough, including historic churches, covered bridges, an early inn, a tin shop, an Underground Railroad Museum, a railroad freight station, as well as historic houses. Demonstrations will include rug braiding, tinsmithing and ballroom dancing. Underground Railroad lectures and the History of the Pennsylvania Railroad can be heard throughout the day. Discounted tickets can be purchased before the tour at the Quilt Ledger (326 Bridge St., Christiana), and R.H. Rohrer and Sons, Inc. (16 E.State St., Quarryville). Pre-tour discounted tickets can also be purchased at the Historical Society (1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville) on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Tour day tickets can be purchased at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (1199 Valley Rd., Quarryville) and the Christiana Freight Station (10 Railroad Ave., Christiana) starting at 9 a.m. Call 610-593-6989  for more information.


June 1

Home & Garden Day

On June 1, eight homes and gardens in the Kennett Square area, including two businesses, will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the benefit of the Bayard Taylor Memorial Library’s children’s programs. Homes this year are located in Unionville. Local vendors will be providing foods and beverages and displaying flower arrangements at the homes, while artists will be painting in the gardens. Lunch will be available at Foxfire Restaurant at the Stone Barn from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch tickets must be purchased in advance for $20. Tour tickets are $35 and must be purchased in advance. Tickets are available at www.bayardtaylor.org, at the library, or by calling 610-444-2702.


June 1

Human trafficking meeting

ACE (Advocating, Collaborating, Educating) Anti-Human Trafficking Alliance of Oxford will meet on June 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at the Oxford Public Library.  Member Jim Sumner will present material from a seminar in State College which he attended on behalf of ACE.  Following the presentation there will be an update on Senate Bills 75 and 915.  All community members are invited to attend.  


June 1
'Broadway on the Brandywine'
Tickets are on sale for “Foundation Fest 2013: Broadway on The Brandywine,” the spring fundraiser for the Unionville-Chadds Ford Education Foundation. The June 1 event at Unionville High School will feature the best of Broadway as performed by Unionville-Chadds Ford School District students and alumni. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for students and seniors.  Food will be sold before the show, along with “Candygrams” for performers. There will also be a raffle to win one of five iPad Minis. Raffle tickets can be purchased in advance in the main office of all Unionville-Chadds Ford schools. Proceeds will fund the Classroom Grant Program, through which the Education Foundation funds enhancements to the education program. Visit www.ucfsd.org for more information.

June 1 and 2
Bonsai show
The Brandywine River Museum (Route 1, Chadds Ford) hosts its annual bonsai show June 1 and 2 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In the museum courtyard. Members of the Brandywine Bonsai Society will demonstrate training techniques and answer questions regarding care of these miniuatur trees. On Saturday, the show is included with general museum admission ($12 for adults; $8 for seniors; $6 for students; free for children under 6). Museum admission is free on Sunday mornings from 9:30 a.m. until noon. Call 610-388-2700 for more information.


June 2
Basket bingo
The Union Fire Company (315 Market St., Oxford) will host a basket bingo with retired Longaberger baskets on June 2. Doors open at 12:30 p.m., and bingo starts at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person for 20 games. Door prizes will be awarded. Food is available from Peppercorns Catering. Proceeds will help Donna Kauffman, a local cancer patient, pay medical expenses. For tickets, call 610-932-0372.

June 3 to 24
Legal issues for seniors
The Kennett Area Senior Center (427 S. Walnut St., Kennett Square), in conjunction with Senior Care Ministries, sponsors four legal issues talks on Mondays in June, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. “Identity Theft & Fraud Abuse will be held June 3. “What is a Durable Power Health Directive, and Do I Need One” is on June 10, “Do You Need a Power of Attorney? and Other Legal Issues” is on June 17, and “Veterans Benefits: Aid and Attendance” is on June 24. Tree identification and letterboxing

On June 5 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Point Lookout Garden (3201 Montchanin Rd., Wilmington, Del.), participants can learn about letterboxing. Learn how, by following clues and documenting the features and measurements of the landscape, students have an adventure that promotes a sense of place. Participants will create their own passport book, and learn measurement and observational techniques for creating their own trail of clues. Visit www.tlcforscc.org to register. The fee is $10.


June 7 to Aug. 29
Concerts at Longwood

Senior center garage sale
The Kennett Area Senior Center (427 S. Walnut St., Kennett Square) sponsors its annual garage sale on June 8 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be decorations for the home, kitchen supplies, appliances, puzzles, toys and  more. Hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks will be sold.

June 8
Cheese tasting
A cheese tasting with Tenaya Darlington of DiBruno Bros. and the blog Madame Fromage, and six Chester County cheese artisans, will be held June 8 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Wyebrook Farm Market in Honey Brook. Participants can meet the farmers enjoy locally crafted cheeses. Participating farms include: Amazing Acres Farm, Birchrun Hills Farm, Conebella Farm, Doe Run Dairy, Shellbark Hollow Farm, and Yellow Springs Farm. A limited amount of cheese will be available for sale in the Wyebrook Farm Market and a small silent auction will also be held to benefit the cheese artisans’ cooperative marketing efforts. Trail clearing
Help is needed to clear trails at the Banffshire Preserve (Creek Road and Chesterville Road, Landenberg) on June 8 starting at 8 a.m. Bring tools such as loppers, rakes, hedge trimmers and chain saws, along with water and a snack. Meet at the new parking area just West of Creek Road on Chesterville Road. The rain date June 9. To reserve a spot, e-mail Snorris@franklintownship.us .


June 8 

Italian dinner

Chester County Pomona Grange will serve a dinner of homemade lasagna, spaghetti, salad bar, and homemade desserts at Russellville Grange Hall (Route 896, one block north of Route 10) on June 8 from 4 to 7 p.m. Tickets at the door are $9 for adults (children under 12, $4.50). June 11
Golden Agers Club
The Golden Agers Club of Cochranville will have their summer banquet on June 11 at noon in the Christiana Fire Hall (Bridge Street in Christiana). There will be a concert by the Golden Agers Chorus with pianist Joan Pierson and Iris Dowling narrating. Visitors are welcome. To make reservations, call  Sandy Wooden at 484-680-5602.

June 14
Hero Walk Parade
The Hometown PA Hero Walk Parade will be held on June 14 to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. Registration begins at 6 a.m. at the Oxford High School track at Hopewell School, with a patriotic program at 7 a.m., and the walk from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Registration is $20, and each registrant will get a T-shirt. June 15
Book and bake sale
The Oxford Public Library (48 S. Second St., Oxford) will be having a book and bake sale on June 15 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The sale will offer adult and children's hardcover and paperback titles, music CDs and DVDs. To donate baked goods for the sale or volunteer to help with the book sale, call 610-932-9625.  All proceeds will help support the library.

June 19
Anson B. Nixon Park concerts
The Anson B. Nixon Park Summer Concert Series returns in June and continues through the summer with free concerts at the bandshell. Patrons can bring their own seating, buy food from a local restaurant or pack a picnic for the shows, which begin at 7 p.m. The schedule includes: Live at the Fillmore, an Allman Brothers Band tribute (June 19); Alligator Zydeco (June 26); singer-songwriter Zack DuPont (July 3); roots rock by Mason Porter (July 10); world music by Kombu Combo (July 17); The Get Real Gang (July 24); Toy Soldiers (July 31); The Spinto Band (Aug. 7).

June 20
Driver safety program
The Kennett Area Senior Center (427 S. Walnut St., Kennett Square) sponsors an AARP Driver Safety Program for drivers age 50 and older on June 20 from noon to 4 p.m. The course is applicable for those who have previously completed the eight-hour course. The session explains the changes that occur in vision, hearing, and reaction time with aging, and provides tips for handling those changes. There is no test and participants may be eligible for a discount on their auto insurance premiums. Call 610-444-4819 for reservations.

June 21
Summer Solstice celebration

On June 21 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Stateline Woods Preserve (814 Merrybell Lane, Kennett Square), The Land Conservancy will mark the changing of seasons and the longest day of the year. Participants can explore woodlands in search of creatures of the night such as owls and bats. Visit www.tlcforscc.org to register. The fee is $5 for TLC members, or $10 for non-members. 



June 22
'Paddling the Brandywine'
“Paddling the Brandywine” will be held June 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. E-mail education@tlcforscc.org for directions and meeting places. Participants will paddle a canoe from the Brandywine River Museum to Thompson’s Bridge, with a stop at Point Lookout beach. Vivian Williams from Stroud Water Research Center will investigate life in the water. The cost is $30 per participant. Register at www.tlcforscc.org.

June 29
'Open Hive Day'
A program focusing on honeybees will be held June 29 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the New Leaf EcoCenter (776 Rosedale Rd., Kennett Square). Apiarist Dan Borkoski will give an inside look at the world of honeybees. Participants will get a close-up look at a hive during routine inspection, while gaining beekeeping knowledge. Protective veils will be available. There is no cost for TLC/CCBA members ($5 for non-members). Register at www.tlcforscc.org.

Aug. 23-25
Brandywine Folk Festival
Anson B. Nixon park in Kennett Square will be the site of the second annual Brandywine Folk Festival on Aug. 23, 24 and 25.  The line-up includes nationally and regionally recognized names such as Good Old War, Secret Sisters, Roadkill Ghost Choir, Pearl & the Beard, Mischief Brew, Toy Soldiers, Mean Lady, Cheers Elephant and others. There will be food and craft vendors, carnival games and a beer garden. The event raises funds for autism awareness through SPARC.
