If you have a young person in your house who's fascinated by airplanes – or if you just want to explore the New Garden Flying Field for yourself – you have a chance this weekend during the facility's annual open house.

The small airport is opening its doors to the community from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and offering a full slate of events for families who want to come and find out about aviation and the importance of the New Garden Field to the local community.

Visitors can get up close to airplanes parked at the field, and even get a ride in one. Pilots will be on hand to explain how planes work, and there will be demonstration flights all day. Several miniature radio-controlled planes will be flown during the day as well.

Visitors will learn about airplane safety and history from participating groups such as the EAA Chaper 240, the New Garden Flight Connection, and the Brandywine Soaring Association.

The Soaring Association is a non-profit group that operates out of the New Garden Airport which provides low-cost glider flights for non-members. All instruction and flights are done by members who are FAA-certified glider instructors. The EAA Chapter 240 is a group of aviation enthusiasts who offer educational workshops and work to sponsor young pilots. They are based at the flying field and they welcome new members. They'll be at the open house to greet visitors and answer any questions about aviation.

On the ground, there will be vintage and classic cars on display by several regional collectors. If you or the kids get hungry, you can enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs and ice cream all day.

Admission is free to everyone. The rain date is June 2. For more information, visit www.newgardenflyingfield.com.
